Learn reverse engineering the only way it actually works: by breaking things.

15 escalating labs take you from your first password check to packed binaries, Android APKs, and live Frida hooks. No 400-page theory prelude — you patch real code in Chapter 4, and it never slows down.

What you'll actually break

Every chapter ends with a lab binary written for this book — legal to reverse, built to teach one precise idea. You get the binary, the source, and a fully annotated walkthrough of the solution.

lab 04

Patch your first password check

Find the string compare in Ghidra, flip one jump in x64dbg, make the patch permanent.

lab 06

Read an algorithm well enough to keygen it

From "it says wrong serial" to understanding the math — without ever seeing the source.

lab 09

Beat anti-debug three ways

IsDebuggerPresent, timing checks, and a sneaky one — then bypass each without crashing.

lab 10

Unpack UPX by hand

Dump from memory, rebuild the import table, no automatic unpacker allowed.

lab 11

Recover a hidden config

A custom-encoded blob in the binary. Static decode + runtime interception, both ways.

lab 14

Hook a live Android app with Frida

From APK to hooked method call at runtime — on a device or emulator, your pick.

The curriculum

Four parts, fifteen chapters. Each part ends with a "boss lab" that combines everything before it.

PART I Foundations — fast, on purpose
  • 1. How software looks to a reverser — bytes, sections, imports, PE vs ELF, what a hex dump tells you in 10 seconds
  • 2. x86-64 assembly survival guide — registers, the stack, calling conventions, and the ~20 patterns that cover 90% of what you'll read
  • 3. Your free toolchain — Ghidra, x64dbg, Detect It Easy, install and first run on Windows and Linux
PART II Static & dynamic analysis
  • 4. First blood: finding the password check ← the free sample chapter
  • 5. Patching: NOP, invert, redirect — three patch philosophies and when each one bites back
  • 6. Understanding the algorithm — from a failed check to a full mental model of the validation logic
  • 7. Keygenning a serial routine — write a generator the target believes
  • 8. Fixing broken binaries — rebuild IATs, repair headers, make dumps run again
PART III Harder targets
  • 9. Anti-debug & anti-VM — detect it, understand it, strip it
  • 10. Unpacking by hand — UPX end-to-end: dump, rebuild, run
  • 11. Custom encoders & config extraction — real malware-analysis workflow, on a safe lab sample
  • 12. Binary diffing — what changed between two versions, and why that's money
PART IV Beyond the desktop
  • 13. Android: APK to smali to runtime — jadx, repackaging, signature pitfalls
  • 14. Frida: hooking anything, anywhere — desktop processes and Android apps, from one CDK
  • 15. Automate it: your own analysis tool in Python — Capstone + a real triage script you'll keep

The toolchain costs nothing

Everything used in this book is free and industry-standard — the same tools people use on the job. NSO this is not, but Ghidra, x64dbg and Frida are what professionals actually open first.

First Blood: Finding the Password Check is the whole book in miniature: recon, Ghidra, one clean patch in x64dbg, and a permanent fix. If you like how it teaches, you'll like the other fourteen.

Who wrote this

The author is an independent security researcher with about three years of hands-on reverse engineering practice — the self-taught path, tool by tool: Ghidra, x64dbg, Frida, and a home lab that grew from a first patched crackme into a full malware-analysis workflow. Reversing by Doing is the book they wish had existed when they started: every lab binary in it was written, compiled, and solved by the author before it earned a page. When not taking binaries apart, they build the tooling — the book's final chapter ships one of their own triage tools.

FAQ

Do I need to know assembly already?
  • No. Chapter 2 is a survival guide, not a reference manual — you learn the ~20 patterns that actually appear, then pick up the rest while reversing.
  • Which OS do I need?
  • Windows 10/11 is the primary environment (x64dbg shines there). Linux paths are given for every lab. The Android labs run on any phone or emulator.
  • Is this legal?
  • Everything you reverse in this book is software written for this book, plus targets you own. The book teaches the workflow — recon, static, dynamic, unpacking — on legal targets. Chapter 1 covers the ground rules.
  • What formats do I get?
  • PDF (desktop reading, print-friendly), DRM-free — EPUB on request. Free updates forever.
  • Refunds?
  • 30 days, no questions asked. Email me with your order number and I'll refund you directly via PayPal — you keep the free chapter.
  • How long does it take?
  • Most readers finish in 30–40 hours. Each lab takes 1–3 hours depending on how stubborn you are before peeking at the walkthrough.
  • Team license?
  • The standard purchase is a personal license. For teams or training cohorts, open an issue on the GitHub repo.
